  94. A friend recently built one of the packet modems like the BAYCOM or Poor Man's
  95. Packet (he described it as a BAYCOM, I haven't seen it) and it works like a
  96. charm on an XT.  However, he has a Macintosh and would like to use it on that
  97. computer.  Is the software for this type of modem available for the MAC?
  98.  
  99. Also, he is having trouble hooking the modem up to his Kenwood TH-78 HT and
  100. would appreciate any pointers on getting that to work correctly.

  156. In operating two BBS's (GB7MXM: AX25-NTS[me], & GB7TXM: TCP/IP[my wife]) I 
  157. believe that our NOVs allows us to handle 3rd party messages. It does not say 
  158. anything in BR68 (UK licence text) that I must exclude non-amateur traffic if 
  159. the traffic has originated from something other than radio modes. Therefore 
  160. running a TCP/IP telephone slip link into say demon.co.uk from our tcp/ip bbs 
  161. allows us in theory to route internet traffic into the amateur network and 
  162. vice-versa!

  164. Practically the phone costs prohibit this activity, along with having to
  165. pursuade demon.co.uk to route 44.131.nnn.nnn etc to our account.

  167. Also my licence is at risk as the 'gateway' operator. If I pass traffic that
  168. is deemed to have gone out of the scope of BR68 then I face the consequences 
  169. not the originator....

  171. Anyhow, there is nothing in theory that should stop it happening legally at 
  172. present. However, who has ever known licences to keep pace with developments?

  192. We were presented with a similar problem several years ago.  It involved
  193. remote clinics in northern Canada transmitting x-ray images to two hospitals
  194. in Montreal and Toronto.  At the time, it was determined that the images
  195. could be compressed to 3 MBytes, but even at that we needed a T1 line to the
  196. sites.  At 40 Mbytes/hour, it sounds like you would still need the same
  197. thing, unless you could do it via microwave.  I'm not up-to-date on
  198. commercial uses of packet, but here even 9600 baud tends to be a stretch, and
  199. that wouldn't be nearly fast enough.

  222.     You are correct.  We're doing it in Buffalo, and in
  223. Pittsburgh...  This system for example allows for messages to go from
  224. ampr.org to Internet.  In time it will also be a wormhole...  But I
  225. need to replace the dreaded UUCP Internet link with something

  232.     Simple... RSO...  Get rid of DOS, run Linux, and get on with
  233. life.  Sorry to sound so incencitive, but that's what works...  And
  234. it's the only thing that works 100% of the time.  Rather than having
  235. KA9Q or it's variants emulate the functionality of TCP/IP (dare I say
  236. UNIX) networking, let Linux do it...  It's inherent in the OS...  No
  237. patches, no band-aids.  And it's wicked fast as well.

  239.     Heck, if everyone ran Linux we could (albeit it would be like
  240. sucking the great lakes through a straw) run graphical applications
  241. via radio.  Something like X-Trek, or something else similar.

  243.     Some say it'll never happen.  I say it will happen if people
  244. wise up.  DOS is now about 14 - 15 years old.  It was meant for an 8
  245. bit processor, 1 task, and that's it!  I like to say DOS is like a
  246. bicycle, and UNIX is like an 18 wheeler.

  248.     The 18 wheeler makes the most out of it's horsepower, and
  249. payload, and it has air conditioning, power windows, power brakes.
  250.  
  251.     They've taken the bicycle, and added a 500 horse power motor,
  252. 3 gear ratios (Windows(tm) Standard Mode, 286 Mode, and 386 Mode), air
  253. conditioning, power windows, and power brakes, maybe even power
  254. steearing.
  255.  
  256.     The analogy is it's still a bicycle frame.  Let's look at what
  257. was added on to DOS.
  258.  
  259.     o Memory Management (640K barrier still exists)
  260.     o Networking (Still quite limiting as you can't do much gatewaying)
  261.     o Graphical Applications (Windows)
  262.     o Multi-Tasking
  263.  
  264.     I'm sure there is more.  But the backwards compatibility
  265. nipped them in the end.
  266.  
  267.     I'd rather go with Platform Independence than backwards
  268. compatibility.  Just re-compile the applications!  Done deal!

  270.     When I migrated from Xenix(tm) to Linux I just re-compiled,
  271. and it was done!  How hard is it to type "make install" in the source
  272. directory?

  275. what has been the main objection to people not getting UNIX?

  292.     o Multi-User?        (Oh, wait, DOS doesn't even know about that)
  293.     o QEMM-386(tm)        (Gee, I'm losing myself here...)
  294.     o Windows Environment?        It's in Linux...   Pick 1,
  295.                     there is 3 or 4 kinds of
  296.                     interfaces.
  297.     o DOS Compatibility?    It's in Linux...  DOS emulator.

  299.     Now, go get it, and sell tell your broker to sell your stock

  398. audio documentaries that discuss subjects regarding mental and 
  399. physical health. Any programming about heart disease, cancer,
  400. physical fitness, diet, meditation, relaxation, phobias, etc. is
  401. of interest.
